Healthy Eating for the Winter and The Essential Oil Blend to use

In most places, winter is a time of colder, shorter days. Naturally, when there is less reason to be outdoors, the body desires to stay warm indoors. The body’s metabolic rate will be slower, so eating foods with excess sugars will become detrimental over time. When the metabolic rate slows, the body naturally holds onto fat, and we gain weight. Just as most animals hibernate throughout the colder winter months, so too should human beings take the information being given and use it accordingly.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, winter is a time of preservation and building up strength for the spring. Winter is a time when the kidneys are highly active. They have functions that assist the body in preserving energy. Foods loaded with salt can burden the kidneys and cause them to work overtime. This can lead to kidney disease or kidney failure when done for many years.

Tonifying/strengthening foods should be the primary food source in the winter months. Most tonics include warming herbs, fatty foods, and meats. The human body is designed to absorb these rich foods exceptionally well at this time of year. By tuning into nature, humans are guided toward the proper nutrients. Since fruits are not usually abundant during winter, we should eat at most a portion. Foods such as fruits, salads, and raw foods can deplete the immune system because they must work overtime to warm the body. This is especially true if a person has a strong aversion to cold weather and has symptoms of joint aches and pains, sore lower back, or catches cold frequently.

It is recommended to eat warm foods during the winter months. Foods that will strengthen the kidneys, blood, and Qi/Energy (pronounced “chee”) Foods that would be best include beef, lamb, root vegetables, dark leafy greens, black beans, oats, quinoa, pumpkin, kidney beans, and walnuts. Warming spices like cinnamon can be added to fruits so they do not tax our system. Herbs such as ginseng, garlic, onion, ginger, parsley, and basil have warming properties that can be used when cooking.

Soups and stews are particularly beneficial and delicious to eat this time of year. Utilizing bone broth as a base can strengthen our system. These foods help warm the body’s core and keep us fully nourished. Cooking should be for extended periods over low heat using less water -infusing the food with lasting nourishment.

In addition to eating warming foods, warming essential oils will be beneficial, and many come from the same spices to use during the winter months, such as Cinnamon, Clove, Lemongrass, and Ginger. All are included in the blend Ascendant Yang by Meridian Biologix. This blend assists in relief from wintertime malaise and is also a powerful libido enhancer for men.
